Experience 02 · The Mindset Shift

From the Industrial Age to the Intelligence Age

Each era of technology taught organizations to ask a different question. None of them replaced the one before. What changes is what we expect our systems — and ourselves — to become.

The question it answers

What happened?

What it does well

Captures transactions, work orders, assets and compliance evidence reliably — the trusted record of what was done.

What it can't do alone

Records rarely explain why something happened, or what the organization learned from it.

It still matters because

Every later layer depends on accurate, governed records. Nothing here is discarded.

Two ways of moving forward

Procure & implementDiscover & learn
Starting pointA specification of the solutionA question worth learning about
Success looks likeOn-time, on-budget go-liveValidated learning that changes what we do
Uncertainty isA risk to be eliminated up frontMaterial to explore in bounded experiments
People areUsers to be trainedSensemakers whose experience is evidence
AI isA feature that automatesA thinking partner that helps connect evidence
The end stateA finished systemA growing capability and organizational memory

Not either/or. Reliable transactional systems, governance and compliance remain the ground we stand on. Discovery works best on top of them — and should strengthen them, never bypass them.

Experience 03 · Living Intelligence

Three complementary capabilities

Not a maturity ladder to climb and leave behind, but three ways of seeing that reinforce one another. Each makes the next one possible.

S1

Performance Visibility

Can we see what is happening?

  • Work orders, response times, backlog and SLA performance made visible
  • Shared facts instead of competing anecdotes

Human role Notice and question what the numbers show.

S2

Reliability Intelligence

Can we understand why — and anticipate?

  • Repeat failures, asset histories and seasonal patterns connected
  • Signals that warn before disruption, not after

Human role Interpret patterns with the context only practitioners hold.

S3

Adaptive Living Intelligence

Can we learn and adapt — together?

  • Human + AI sensemaking loops that test ideas in bounded experiments
  • What is learned is kept, shared and built upon

Human role Decide, act, reflect — AI supports, people remain accountable.

How experience becomes memory

Follow one HVAC signal around the loop. Select a step, or walk through it.

A five-step learning loop: operational experience, evidence, shared understanding, adaptive action, organizational memory, returning to experience. learning compounds

Operational experience

A technician notices the same air handler is called in for comfort complaints every warm afternoon on one floor.

Experience 04 · Care-Enabling Infrastructure Intelligence

The building is part of care

Facilities conditions shape the setting in which care happens. HVAC reliability is our first example — chosen because its connections can be observed in operational data before anyone makes a claim about clinical outcomes.

Connections from HVAC reliability to care Equipment reliability connects to room conditions and operational continuity through observable evidence. Links onward to staff effectiveness and patient experience are hypotheses to test.

Equipment reliability

What we can observe now

Work orders, repeat calls, run-time and alarm histories for air handlers, chillers and controls show where and when equipment struggles.

What remains a hypothesis

That improving reliability on specific assets reduces disruption elsewhere in the building — to be confirmed by tracking before and after a change.

Evidence before claims

  1. ObservedPatterns visible in work orders, building automation trends and asset histories.
  2. ConnectedOperational relationships checked with the people who do the work.
  3. TestedA bounded Living Lab tries a change and measures what happens.
  4. ValidatedResults replicated and reviewed before anyone speaks of outcomes.

Links to staff effectiveness and patient experience stay labelled as hypotheses until they are tested with appropriate clinical, privacy and ethics oversight.

Safeguards from the first day

  • Non-patient data first. Begin with operational data — work orders, equipment and environmental readings. No protected health information.
  • Each institution owns its data. Data stays inside the institution's own environment and governance.
  • Least access. Role-based access, logged and reviewable.
  • Share learning, not records. What crosses boundaries is questions, patterns and methods — aggregated or de-identified if ever needed.
  • Review before linkage. Any future connection to clinical data goes through the institution's privacy, security and research-ethics processes first.
  • People decide. AI suggests and connects evidence; accountable humans decide and act.

Experience 05 · Ecosystem Collective Intelligence

Independent, and learning together

A federated shape: every institution keeps its own data, decisions and knowledge. What travels between them is curiosity — questions, patterns and methods worth comparing.

Organizations named here are prospective co-discovery participants. Their inclusion does not mean they have committed to, partnered with, or endorsed this work.

Federated learning ecosystem: prospective participants arranged around a shared learning space. Each keeps its own data, decisions and knowledge. shared learning space

Stays home

  • Raw operational data
  • Decisions and priorities
  • Institutional knowledge and context

Experience 06 · Discover Your WHY

Three questions, in your own words

A few minutes of reflection. There are no right answers, and no one is scoring.

Your reflections stay in this browser tab. Nothing is sent, stored on a server, or shared. Closing the tab clears them.

Which perspective are you bringing?
1 of 3What must your organization become better at by 2030?
2 of 3What limits your ability to learn and adapt today?
3 of 3What might become possible if healthcare organizations learned together?

Experience 07 · Co-Discover Vision 2030

A pathway we would walk together

A shared vision cannot be announced. It has to be discovered — one honest question, one bounded experiment, one validated lesson at a time.

  1. 01

    Individual WHY

Each person names what their organization must become better at.

    You are here
  2. 02

    Shared Aspirations

Conversations reveal where those WHYs overlap.

  3. 03

    Collective Opportunity

A question emerges that no one institution could answer alone.

  4. 04

    Bounded Living Lab

A small, governed experiment with clear scope and safeguards.

  5. 05

    Validated Learning

Evidence is reviewed honestly — including what didn't work.

  6. 06

    Emerging Shared Vision

A vision grounded in what participants have learned together.

Where things stand

No consortium, partnership or shared vision has been formally established. This is an invitation to explore whether one should be.

If you could bring one question to that conversation, what would it be?

Bring your reflection to the person who shared this experience with you.

The future is not something we simply implement. It is something we discover, shape and learn to create together.
